What might seem like a light-hearted and original prom photo has fueled a dramatic Twitter argument — especially after it was compared to the KKK lynching people.
The photo, which depicts a group of guys dressed up as superheroes while their dates unveil which superhero they are, was brought to light by video game director David Jaffe.
Jaffe scorned the photo, taken by Johnny Bolinger of BN Focus Photography, calling it “grossly” “sexist.”
I think it´s safe to say that David Jaffe has lost his mind :S https://t.co/EjcevxXPXw #GamerGate #GamersUnite http://pic.twitter.com/86xGIa4ho7

So far, the photo has received over 41 million views and 380,000 ‘like.’
Have a look:
As a comicGeek,I so want 2 love this prom picture. But it's so grossly unaware of how sexist it is that I just can't. http://pic.twitter.com/n0H4Ni13Mg

Confused about Jaffe’s critcism, one of his 50k-plus followers asked him what ‘negative stereotypes’ the photo was portraying?
Jaffe responded with this:
.@MShaneman The men as heroes, the women as subserviant. Not a single female hero. The men serious/in thought, the women only all smiles.
— davidscottjaffe (@davidscottjaffe) May 8, 2016
Another social media user came to the girls’ defense, writing:
@davidscottjaffe @MShaneman What about the goofy smile on Cap's face?Maybe the girls were into it, maybe they enjoyed it,how would we know?
— Marcel (@LAME_STREET) May 8, 2016
However, the video game guru took things to the next level by responding with a KKK reference:
@LAME_STREET @MShaneman I'd imagine the Klan was 'into it' when they lynched people. Doesn't make the act any less racist/horrific.
— davidscottjaffe (@davidscottjaffe) May 8, 2016
At this point, it seemed as though anyone who may have sided with Jaffe originally no longer supported him:
@davidscottjaffe @LAME_STREET @MShaneman So in your mind women who enjoy this role in a relationship are akin to bring in the KKK? lololol

Comparing a pic of kids having a good time to the KKK to push an agenda. https://t.co/ILPpSbCtq2

>comparing a prom photo to lynching.
Lmao.
Lynching really isn't something both parties consent to you know.

But wait—Jaffe’s comments get even more off topic.
He later tells people that he is fine with the prom-goers having sex that night:
People wud B surprised to learn I'd be fine if these kids were CONSEUNTIALLY FUCKING EACH OTHER in the prom picture. People so quick2attack.
— davidscottjaffe (@davidscottjaffe) May 8, 2016
It’s safe to say this was the general consensuses to Jaffe’s comment:
Kids consensually posing in a superhero picture= wrong
Kids consensually fucking= A-OK
I think your priorities are warped @davidscottjaffe— Gihren of the ϟ三 (@Bastardo_Verde) May 8, 2016
When all was said and done, Jaffe felt the need to let everyone know that he did not appreciate the hurtful comments he received:
AMAZED and actually kind of sad about how MEAN SPIRITED some people have been on my twitter feed tonite. I posted a thought on a prom pic
— davidscottjaffe (@davidscottjaffe) May 8, 2016
Later posting:
that I feel/felt was sexist and while there was SOME interesting discussion, so much of it was bile and hatred and cruel and so downright
— davidscottjaffe (@davidscottjaffe) May 8, 2016
And that’s how a prom photo got compared to the Klu Klux Klan.
Do you find the prom photo sexist?
Absolutely not.
Yes I do.
I don’t, but I see where Jaffe is coming from.
