One of America’s leading political satirists, P.J. O’Rourke, once joked that polio-suffering President Franklin Delano Roosevelt “was wheeled up the disabled access ramp to the Gates of Hell.”
But in an election year when anything can happen, O’Rourke is letting go of his usual Republican partisanship.
In an appearance on NPR game show “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” O’Rourke told listeners:
“My whole purpose in life, basically, is to offend everyone who listens to NPR.”
Then he added:
“I am endorsing Hillary and all her lies and all her empty promises.
“I am endorsing Hillary, the second-worse thing that could happen to this country. But it’s — she’s way behind in second-place.
“She’s wrong about absolutely everything but she’s wrong within normal parameters.”
That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement but, more importantly, it’s a vote.

Referring to Trump, O’Rourke remarked:
“I mean, this man just can’t be president. They’ve got this button, you know, in the briefcase. He’s going to find it.”
In recent days, prominent members of the “Never Trump” conservative movement pledged to vote for Hillary Clinton in November, if she wins the Democratic presidential nomination, instead of presumed Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Reports also surfaced late last week that the pro-Clinton super PAC Priorities USA Action plans to target disillusioned Republican voters and megadonors who are rejecting Trump.
But for every prominent Republican jumping into the Clinton camp, another gets tallied for Trump.

For instance, former Vice President Dick Cheney announced this weekend he will support the billionaire real estate mogul in a step away from his former boss, President George W. Bush, who said he will not be endorsing any candidates this election.
Nothing, it seems, is happing this year within “normal parameters.”
